At Home & Abroad in Southern California

Last week, we took our first official trip as At Home & Abroad! We got away to Southern California for a few days, where we enjoyed Disneyland and California Adventure, as well as the Getty Villa and Getty Center museums. It was a much-needed girls’ trip! Here are just a few highlights.

The Highlights According to Kaycie

Favorite Disneyland Ride: Pirates of the Caribbean, Splash Mountain, and Star Tours

There just isn’t a way to choose a single favorite! So I narrowed it down to my top three. Pirates is always a favorite – I don’t know what it is about that ride, but I just love it! I was also SUPER excited to go on Splash Mountain because on my last trip to Disneyland, it was closed. We went on it twice, and the second time, we got SOAKED! The picture is probably my favorite of the whole trip! Star Tours was also super fun; I love the changes they have made to the ride! Also, let’s be honest here. Who hasn’t been on a bit of a Star Wars kick since Episode VII: The Force Awakens came out?

As you can see, we were drenched – I think our facial expressions say it all!

Favorite Disneyland Food: Chicken Sandwich from Village Haus in Fantasyland and the Enchiladas at Rancho del Zocalo in Frontierland

We had to eat Mexican food for Cinco de Mayo! Plus it is one of my favorites in the park. We also ate at Village Haus in Fantasyland. It was my first time eating there, and the food was delicious! I had a grilled chicken sandwich with mozzarella cheese and arugula. It was delightful!

Favorite Disneyland Treat: Mickey Suckers

I seriously love these things! I get a bundle every time I go to a Disney Park. My personal favorite is the watermelon (green), but really they are all good. Plus, when you are in Disneyland, you need to eat all the things that are shaped like Mickey! (Sorry I didn’t take a photo!)

Favorite California Adventure Ride: Tower of Terror and Soarin’ over California

No matter how many times I ride Tower of Terror, I never get used to that free fall. I get butterflies every time! I also LOVE Soarin’ over California. This ride was another one that was closed last time I was there, so I was super excited to go on it again. If you have never been on this ride before, it is an absolute MUST in California Adventure!

I got a good kick out of the fact that the wait time was listed as 13 minutes on Tower of Terror!

Favorite California Adventure Treat: Churros at the Cozy Cone

Disneyland is the first place I ever ate a churro, so I always make sure to get one when I am there. I had heard about the amazing churro bites with chocolate sauce at the Cozy Cone in Cars Land, but sadly, they were sold out of those. The churro with caramel sauce I had in its place was still amazing though! You just can’t go wrong with a Disney churro.

Favorite Show/Parade: World of Color in California Adventure

You guys are going to think I am lying, but World of Color was also closed on my last Disney trip. (They were getting everything ready for the 60th anniversary celebration, which resulted in lots of stuff being closed.) I was so happy that everything was up and running this trip and was so excited to see World of Color for the first time. I have always been a huge fan of Fantasmic and didn’t think anything could top it, but World of Color just might! I loved the music, the lights, the water, and especially the fact that Neil Patrick Harris is the host!

I didn’t take any pics during the show, but here is one of us waiting for the show to start!

Favorite Piece at the Getty Villa: Herb Garden and A Young Girl Holding Doves

As it was my first time at both Getty Museums, it was hard to pick a favorite. I saw so many pieces that I absolutely LOVED. The Herb Garden at the Getty Villa was definitely a favorite – they had olive trees, grapevines, and all sorts of herbs that are written about in ancient texts. They also had the marble relief of A Young Girl Holding Doves on loan from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. I loved this piece; it was one of my favorites!

Favorite piece at Getty Center: The Portal of Rouen Cathedral in Morning Light by Claude Monet and Irises by Vincent Van Gogh

Van Gogh is my favorite artist of all time, so I was super excited to see Irises (1889). I am also a big fan of Monet and always love seeing his work. The Portal of Rouen Cathedral in Morning Light (1894) was amazing. Really the whole museum was incredible – the architecture, the exhibits, and not to mention the Italian soda!

The Highlights According to Caroline

Favorite Disneyland Ride: Peter Pan’s Flight and/or King Arthur’s Carousel and/or Jungle Cruise

I really just can’t choose! Peter Pan’s Flight is a classic and has been a top favorite for years; however, there’s something simply magical about the carousel. I always take a selfie with my horse, too.

And the Jungle Cruise is so funny, plus we had the great surprise of this attraction opening on Friday when we thought it would be closed!

Favorite Disneyland Food: Jambalaya at the French Market Restaurant in New Orleans Square

This was my first time at this restaurant, as well as my first time trying jambalaya. I’m a big fan of Cajun-Creole cuisine, so I was excited to try the jambalaya. I was not disappointed! It was so flavorful and filling. (Sorry I didn’t take a photo! I’m not used to consistently taking photos of my food.)

Favorite Disneyland Treat: Chocolate-covered pineapple skewer

You might remember from my last trip to Disneyland that I recently discovered a new treat: the chocolate-covered pineapple skewer. Let me assure you that the second time is just as magical as the first. Heaven (aka pineapple) on a stick. Covered in chocolate. What more could you ask for?

Favorite California Adventure Ride: The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure

I’ve been a fan of The Little Mermaid my whole life – the movie was released the same year I was born. This ride is simply a dream come true.

Favorite California Adventure Treat: Ghirardelli ice cream

We stopped at the Ghirardelli® Soda Fountain and Chocolate Shop in California Adventure for some ice cream. I got a scoop of butter pecan ice cream and knew upon the first bite that I had chosen wisely.

Favorite Show/Parade: Paint the Night Parade in Disneyland

Simply put, I think this is one of the best parades Disney has created in a long, long time. It’s colorful and light-filled and so fun!

Disneyland Castle at Night
I didn’t get any shots of the parade, so please accept this one of Sleeping Beauty’s Castle by night!

Favorite piece at the Getty Villa: The Courtyard and Torso of Actaeon

The Getty Villa is modeled on an ancient Roman villa, and the courtyard is simply stunning. I love the perfect combination of the architecture, the fountains, the sculpture, and the plants.

I love too many pieces in the Villa’s collection to pick a true favorite, but the Torso of Actaeon (Roman, 1st-2nd century) is breathtaking. Seriously. Just look at it.

Favorite Piece at the Getty Center: Fountain of Love by Jean-Honoré Fragonard or Van Tromp, going about to please his Masters, Ships a Sea, getting a Good Wetting by J.M.W. Turner

This is like asking me to pick my favorite child (or at least I imagine it is – I don’t have any children). Fragonard’s Fountain of Love (about 1785) is a favorite of mine, and after not seeing it for a few months, I was delighted to find it back on view.

Another favorite is J.M.W. Turner. His painting Van Tromp, going about to please his Masters, Ships a Sea, getting a Good Wetting (1844) is another favorite at the Getty Center.
